The
newly restored Morris Dancers Ground was officially opened by the Mayor of
Wigan on Saturday June 28th, at the twentieth performance of
the revival years. The Mayor joined the Queen of the Abram Morris Dance at
the foot of the new maypole while the dance was performed around them
watched by a large crowd of local residents.

At the end of the performance
a toast was proposed to “The Morris Dancers Ground and Abram Morris
Dancers, past, present and future!” |
There
is still work to be done to complete the restoration as we
hope to provide benches and a proper sign with an interpretation
board. We also want to landscape the area around the ground by planting
native species of trees, shrubs and wildflowers but all that will have to
wait until we have sufficient funds so the fund-raising and grant
applications will continue for at least another year. However, next
year’s practices will, in keeping with the tradition, take place on the Morris
Dancers Ground (instead of the car park of the Dover Lock Inn where
we’ve held them for the past 20 years) and the Abram Morris Dance will
be performed around the Abram maypole on the Morris
Dancers Ground at the top of Park Lane on the last Saturday in June
at 11.00am. |
